Storing Cannabis Seeds
Best Ways to Store Cannabis Seeds
With the right storage methods, you can increase the lifespan of your cannabis seeds to 10 years or even more in some cases. If you're collecting premium genetics for a future that includes lawful germination, this can mean the difference between incredible success and extreme disappointment.
At a bare minimum, you should always store marijuana seeds in a cool, dry, dark place. Here are a few other things you should do:
If the breeder packed your cannabis seeds inside an environmentally controlled breeder container with vacuum seals and moisture controls, you should leave the packaging intact for storage. Otherwise, place your seeds in a zip-lock bag, a film canister or something similar to keep moisture levels low.
For maximum protection, add some rice or silica gel to your own packaging or consider investing in a home vacuum sealer.
Storing Cannabis Seeds in the Fridge
The jury is still out on this one. Some breeders recommend storing ganja seeds in the fridge to maintain a steady temperature. Others contend that this is an invitation for mould because condensation builds up every time the door is opened. Frost-free models reduce the humidity inside the refrigerator, but some say this feature can also dry out the seed too much. You just can't win!
If you decide to use the refrigerator method, use an airtight container (like a film canister) and place it near the back where there is less moisture and fewer temperature fluctuations.
Storing Cannabis Seeds in the Freezer
This is also up for debate. Some say that viability drops sharply after weed seeds have been in the freezer for more than 6 months. Others swear it's the only reliable option for long-term storage. Everyone agrees that thawing and refreezing seeds will destroy them. You chances for success with this method may depend on good vacuum-sealing techniques to eliminate air & moisture - exactly what you'd do to protect anything else from freezer burn.
We don't recommend the freezer method.
What Can I Really Expect?
As long as you store your seeds properly, you can expect the majority to be viable for about 5 years. After than, germination rates begin to drop. However, there are plenty of people who have successfully planted cannabis seeds that were 10 years old - or even older. Remember, these are natural, living products - just like other seeds, puppies, kittens and goldfish. We can provide the genetics and the weed gods take care of the rest!
